Hurricane preparedness expo runs 4 to 7 today on Taylor Street

Recent actions by the Florida Legislature have placed several proposed constitutional amendments related to property taxes on the November 2026 ballot. Property taxes account for approximately 46 percent of Hollywood's General Fund revenues, and nearly two-thirds of that General Fund budget supports public safety services, including police and fire rescue. Bridge repair projects are underway at the Johnson Street and Sherman Street bridges. Work at Johnson Street runs July 6 through September 15, 2026, with one travel lane open in each direction throughout construction, and the C-10 Canal at that bridge closed to boating traffic for the duration. Sherman Street runs far longer, from July 6, 2026 through March 15, 2027. From July 9 to October 11, one lane there carries alternating eastbound and westbound traffic under a temporary signal, with pedestrian access on one side. The bridge closes fully to vehicles and pedestrians from October 12 to December 18 with a signed detour in place, then reopens to one alternating lane from December 19 through March 1, 2027. Phase 6 of the Harrison Street Streetscape Project began Monday, July 6, on the north side of the 2000 block of Harrison Street between 20th and 21st Avenues, and is scheduled to run through September 18. The westbound lane of that block is closed to vehicular traffic during daytime work and reopens each evening. Sidewalks and accessibility to all businesses remain open at all times. Five earlier phases across the 1800, 1900 and 2000 blocks are substantially complete, and the schedule remains subject to weather delays and other unforeseen circumstances. (Hollywood CRA)

Free sand and sandbags are available to Hollywood residents on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last, offered as part of the city's preparations for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. Distribution began Monday, June 29. The season is underway, and the city has urged residents to make sure their households are prepared for severe weather rather than waiting for a named storm to form. (City of Hollywood)

Justice Skatepark at Stan Goldman Park is open to the public and welcoming skaters of all skill levels. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for August. The remodeled park added new quarter pipes, double-sided curbs and ledges, and it is named for Justice Chin, a community champion for improvements at the skate park and an advocate for the skateboarding community. Surface repairs are taking place in the alley between Cleveland Street and McKinley Street from N. 50th Avenue to Emerson Drive. The work falls under the city's 2026 Alleys Resurfacing Program, in which Development Services contractor Basile USA Inc. is milling and resurfacing alleys across Hollywood neighborhoods. Hollywood has partnered with Downtown Strategies, a division of Retail Strategies, on a Downtown Business Recruitment Initiative that actively recruits prospective tenants to fill vacant storefronts in the downtown district. A stakeholder input session for property owners, commercial brokers, lenders and community partners is set for August 12 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Development Services Hub in City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, second-floor conference room, with advance registration. Downtown Hollywood's multi-family market continues to strengthen, with vacancy declining to 16.9 percent and more than 750 units absorbed over the past year as the market progresses toward stabilization. New and recently delivered developments including The Tropic, Gaia Residences, Revv Hollywood and The Holly by Soleste are bringing hundreds of new residents to the urban core, and multiple properties are now leasing, selling or in active construction phases. Bollard installation on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard between 20th and 21st Avenues is underway through August 17. Parking spaces on that block are unavailable during the work. Construction on the Sheridan Street bridge rehabilitation will be completed in phases and is expected to include temporary lane closures, nightly traffic diversions, pedestrian detours and overnight work along Sheridan Street and Florida's Turnpike. The city is preparing to launch the next phase of its Accela online permitting system in August, bringing permitting and related services together in one location. The change is directed at residents, businesses and contractors who currently use city permitting services. (City of Hollywood)
